About Dr Hugo Fernandes

Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist

Dr Hugo is a leading gynaecologist and fertility specialist based in Melbourne. His story reflects his dedication to continually advancing his knowledge and expertise, as well as an unwavering commitment to improving women’s health outcomes.

Hi, my name is Dr Hugo Fernandes

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about me. I am a consultant gynaecologist and advanced laparoscopic surgeon in Melbourne, Victoria. My main rooms are in Richmond at the Epworth, and I also consult in Coburg and Warragul.

My Story

I grew up in Melbourne and completed my specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Health in 2011. It was there I developed my passion for minimally invasive and advanced gynaecological surgery. I also took the unusual and unprecedented step for a gynaecologist by training on a colorectal and general surgical unit.

In 2014, I completed a two-year fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at The Royal Women’s Hospital and became one of the first AGES accredited laparoscopic surgeons. This means I am one of a handful of surgeons trained and accredited by the peak gynaecological society in Australasia to operate at the highest level of my specialty and train other surgeons. I was also awarded the prestigious David Healy Memorial Travelling Fellowship, which allowed me to train in France and the USA.

Following my advanced fellowship, I pursued a Masters in Reproduction and undertook IVF and fertility training with a world-renowned unit, solidifying my expertise as an IVF Specialist in Melbourne. In 2019, I co-founded Newlife IVF with five other leading fertility specialists to offer women and couples a personalised, caring, and supportive fertility experience.

Dr Hugo Goal

My Goal

My goal is always to deliver compassionate care and the best outcome for my patients. I pride myself on understanding your needs and circumstances and then providing you with unrushed, honest, up-to-date and relevant information to make informed decisions.

I do not overstate my abilities nor downplay your concerns and always strive to deliver the best outcome. I have chosen to only practice in gynaecology, laparoscopic surgery, and infertility to concentrate on the patient I am consulting with or operating on, without the concern of having obstetric patients in labour.

More About Me

As a consultant gynaecologist on both laparoscopic units at The Royal Women’s Hospital, I actively teach medical students, junior doctors and the next generation of advanced laparoscopic surgeons.

I’m actively involved in Australian and international gynaecological societies and have presented research and teaching locally and internationally. I also have ongoing research into adenomyosis, endometriosis and infertility.

I live in Melbourne with my partner and our four girls. I am a tragic supporter of the Melbourne Football Club and enjoy travelling, good wine, good coffee and all things WWII and aviation-related.
