Are You Dealing With Irregular Bleeding? It May Be Caused by Uterine Polyps

Have you noticed that your periods are different from how they used to be? You may have abnormal bleeding, excessive bleeding, or now feel pain in your lower abdomen during your period when you didn’t before. These symptoms may be difficult to deal with and may cause you concern, wondering what may be the issue.

In some cases, the problem may be uterine polyps. Dr Hugo has many years of experience in the surgical removal of uterine polyps and always provides compassionate care with your unique needs in mind.

What are Uterine Polyps?

Uterine polyps, also known as endometrial polyps, are somewhat common among women, particularly those of reproductive age. These are growths that form in the lining of the uterus and can vary in size as well as number (how many a person has). Most polyps are benign but have the potential to cause a range of symptoms that may impact a person’s quality of life.

Uterine polyps occur when the endometrial tissue overgrows. They develop around a blood vessel and typically measure between several millimetres and centimetres. They tend to be flat against the uterine lining, but may also protrude into the uterine cavity, sometimes extending through the cervix.

Endometrial polyps may lead to irregular bleeding or heavy bleeding, which often causes people to see their doctor. However, in some cases they may not cause any symptoms, making it difficult to know approximately how many women have these polyps.

Uterine Polyp Symptoms

Endometrial polyps are more common in women who have gone through menopause, though they may affect younger women as well. While some polyps are asymptomatic, some possible symptoms of an endometrial polyp include:

  • Irregular bleeding
  • Heavy bleeding/heavy periods
  • Bleeding between menstrual cycles
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Bleeding after intercourse, if the polyps protrude through the cervix

Uterine Polyp Treatment Options

Treatment options for endometrial polyps include conservative management and polyp removal. Typically, conservative treatment is an option for small polyps (under 10mm). This may be watching and waiting for the polyps to resolve on their own, which may happen in women who have not entered menopause. Other conservative treatment options include hormone therapy such as progestin in an effort to reduce polyp size, or intrauterine devices (IUDs) with an aim to manage symptoms.

Uterine Polyp Removal

In some cases, surgical removal may be the most appropriate option. This typically simple procedure is called a hysteroscopy and is performed under general anaesthetic. It involves using polyp forceps and a thin, lighted tube with a small camera that allows the surgeon to examine your cervix and uterus. Here, they aim to remove polyps as well as any adhesions or uterine fibroids that may be present.

While the vast majority of polyps are benign (non-cancerous), some may be malignant. A removed polyp will be sent for biopsy to determine whether more treatment may be necessary.

Your Uterine Polyp Questions Answered

Are there any risk factors for developing uterine polyps?

There are some risk factors associated with uterine polyps, such as:

  • Being in menopause or perimenopause
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Taking tamoxifen (a medication for breast cancer)
  • Taking hormone therapy medication

How are uterine polyps diagnosed?

Some tests that aim to diagnose uterine polyps include transvaginal ultrasound, diagnostic hysteroscopy, and endometrial biopsy.

Does having uterine polyps affect your fertility?

Some people with endometrial polyps may experience fertility issues. This is because uterine polyps may interfere with the implantation of a fertilised egg, creating a physical barrier that makes it difficult for the embryo to attach to the uterine wall. They may also affect the endometrium, cause hormonal imbalances, or create inflammation that may contribute to fertility issues. As such, if you’re concerned about your fertility and issues such as endometrial polyps, uterine fibroids, or cervical polyps, it’s important to seek medical care.
