Assisted Reproductive Technology Specialist Melbourne
Dr Hugo Fernandes
The ART of reproductive support.
Your Fertility Journey Starts Here
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) refers to all fertility treatments that handle eggs and sperm. These technologies and procedures are designed to support a couple’s fertility journey and potentially increase the chances of conception.
Dr Hugo is a fertility specialist with extensive experience in a wide variety of ART techniques and a dedication to tailoring care to each patient. No matter your concerns, Dr Hugo is here to support your reproductive health every step of the way at his fertility clinic Melbourne.
Types of Assistive Reproductive Technology
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
IVF treatment involves retrieving eggs and fertilising them with sperm in a lab. If this results in an embryo, the embryo is then transferred into the uterus to try to achieve pregnancy.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI places specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus around ovulation, which aims to increase the chances of fertilisation.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
A single sperm is injected directly into an egg in the lab, often used when there are male fertility issues or previous IVF attempts haven’t worked.
Egg and Sperm Donation
Egg freezing and donor sperm are used when one partner cannot use their own, or when a couple would like to preserve their fertility.
Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)
A previously frozen embryo from an earlier IVF cycle is thawed and transferred to the uterus, potentially allowing for pregnancy without starting a new cycle.
Gestational Surrogacy
An embryo created via IVF is carried by a surrogate who is not genetically related to the baby. This may be used when pregnancy isn’t medically possible for the intended parent(s).
Comprehensive Genetic Testing
By extracting a few cells from the embryo, we may create a detailed genetic analysis before IVF implantation that includes:
PGT-A
PGT-M
If there is a known risk of inherited genetic conditions, this may allow couples to prevent the transmission.
PGT-SR
In cases of chromosomal structural rearrangements, this may help avoid potential anomalies developing.
